The graphics are okay, the animation is minimal, the soundtrack is pretty good. The enemies are dull, and are largely just pallette swaps of previous enemies. The boxing in of the screen space is hugely irritating, and detracts from the immersion in the game. The character's lack of animation really sucks the life out of things too.This is my favourite genre, and I bought After Death at 50% off but still have requested my money back. With competition out there like Axiom Verge and a plethora of others, this just doesn't cut the mustard.. I just brought this game. I love its style and its music. Took me about six hours + some time to hunt down the secrets. If you crave metroidvanias or sega genesis-style games get it asap. But at current price, i'd say only if you own all of the good ones already.. This game is the definition of the word hidden gem. It's INCREDIBLE and very hidden (sadly because it deserve more recognition). If you like Metroidvanias this is one of the better ones. A very extensive maps, and more bosses and upgrades than usual. The graphics are fun faux creepy that suit the theme. The bosses as a trifle easy (until the last one), but I don't mind that. For some reason I ended with only 82%. Maybe because II missed achievements?. IfI'd like to unlock the other 12%, because the game is that much fun.. I could have easily been convinced that this was a high quality Sega Genesis title that was released near the end of the console's life.The game has fantastic atmosphere with music to match (one song in particular gave me a serious DOOM vibe). There are plenty of secrets and power ups to find, and there's even a 'true ending' to be unlocked for finding several specific secrets. To help with exploration, there's an in-game map that shows teleport and save rooms. The controls and pace felt a tad sluggish at first, but once I adapted to it (took less than thirty minutes) and found a few upgrades I was movin' and groovin' just fine. The elemental powers are used in a few fun ways, which turned a few areas into what felt like mini-puzzles. Most of the boss fights were an absolute blast and I rarely was irked when I died. The plot is dealt out little by little as you progress through the game, and there were a couple of moments that had me intrigued.The only bug I encountered in this game was where an enemy created floor spikes in an area that was out of bounds instead of under the protagonist.. After Death is a good metroidvania game, but now let’s talk about the story.You play as an undead skeleton that wakes up in a cold wet crypt, with no memory of who he is or where he is, but soon he finds out that he must open a portal and to do that he must fight.Okay what’s there to like about the game, well to start with the bosses are Awesome, they not only look cool and scary there are a lot of them to fight.The music of the game is very good from soft music to heavy metal. The levels are big diverse from a graveyard to a desert, to even a library. The art style is goods it definitely has a nice old school Castlevania feel too it. There was all so no bugs in the game and I liked how you got to save in the game it was very easy. The story was nice and had a good mystery too it, the atmosphere was all so good.The power ups we get after killing the bosses were nice like ice and fire amour, or being able to turn into a skeleton spider.Okay now for what not to like about the game. Well there is no boss rush mode and I would have liked some more power ups or maybe another sub weapon.So in the end this is a good metroidvania game, with great bosses, good music and a nice art style, so I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good metroidvania game.. Is this a good game? No. Is this a good Metroidvania? Yes.Here are my pros\/cons:Pros - Amazing music.- Really strong MV elements. Great exploration. Plenty of ability-gated areas and backtracking in the large world map.- Somewhat profound ending\/meaning to the game.- Items to pick up don't disappear.Cons- Clunky movement and platforming. No directly diagonal jump (can only jump up then move in air, or move on ground then jump), some platforms seem to extend longer than they appear, some things don't look like platforms and you'll unexpectedly land on them.- Clunky combat. Inconsistent hitboxes (see flying skulls and jellyfish. Basically same enemy, but hitboxes are wayyyy different). The movement issues listed above affect combat (bad jumping to avoid damage, landing on wrong platforms, etc)- On one occasion UI got in the way of a platform needing to be carefully jumped on.- Major balance issues (some enemies seem too burdensome to deal with, damage from off-screen\/falling onto damage, some bosses are either extremely easy or frustratingly difficult, etc).Overall, I'm glad I played the game. I'd suggest it for any MV fan. For the variety gamer? YMMV. Just be prepared for some frustration, but not by design. Game is just really rough around the edges, but worth a play.. POST FINISH UDPATE:I have to switch negative.While I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the game to discover that there is a castlevania "true ending" option that isn't otherwise immediately obvious, I was completely let down by the fact that there are no real hints as to where to go for it. You're given a basic tool to support the search, but it's a brute force search over the entire map, at slow, boring navigation speeds, which is just terrible.Symphony of the Night: Hmm, you can't access this area, maybe there's a secret?After Death: Hmm, you already explored 100% of the map, maybe you should now do it again?ORIGINAL:This is a soft recommend, because I don't think the game is necessarily good, but it doesn't do anything to annoy me, for the most part.It's an okay metroidvania, mostly just lacking movement tech, and there don't appear to be any secrets.The animations are a bit stilted in a lot of cases, and the art a little flat in colors.But, it's consistent, and the bosses are generally imaginative and fun (if easy), and I think that consistency across the entire game experience, without it being necessarily bad anywhere, put me on the "pro" vs" con" side of the binary. I'd be neutral on this, but if I have to pick.. I loved this game. I got 30 other games the same day; this was the first I tried and it was the only one I played the entire day. The combat is fun and It has great power up progression. The boss battles are engaging and varied. This is a true Metroid style game. Thankfully you don't need to do any bomb jumping but you do turn into a spider instead of a morph-ball. I beat the game in 9 hours and some change at 91% completion. This game was just fantastic.
